Stats SA bases the data on prices it collects to calculate the consumer price index, which includes grocery items such as maize flour, white and brown bread, rice, cake flower, chicken, beef, cabbage, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, milk, eggs, cooking oils, instant coffee, fruit juices and sugar. Stats SA uses it to measure poverty
